Choose Event Activities – Find a Speaker
Finding the right speaker can be a difficult challenge. Booking a "celebrity" speaker might seem like a coup, but the deciding factor should be how well the speaker suits the theme and the goal of your event.
Before making any calls, review the event's agenda to see what type of speaker and subject would best fit your needs. Review speakers for your past events; were they well received? Have a clear idea of the speaker's role in the event and what you want the speaker to accomplish. Then budget what you can afford to pay, since cost might exclude certain speakers.
If a speaker has all the right credentials and is in the budget, ask for videos and references to help you decide if this is the right speaker for your event. Be sure to have a written agreement with the speaker that includes time, date, and place of the engagement; what is expected of the presentation; negotiated items such as transportation, food, accommodations, and beverage expense; any audio or video requirements; and cancellation or "no-show" agreement. Request all materials that the speaker is planning to use well in advance.
The National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation has compiled a 35-page listing of event speakers, which is available to coordinators of each year's registered events. A link to the searchable, online Speakers Bureau Roster will be e-mailed to the coordinator after each event is registered. For more information, contact info@ncsd.org or call 615-794-3006.
