A Message From the National
Cancer Institute

To be presented on June 1, 2008

Dr. NiederhuberOn behalf of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), I extend greetings to everyone celebrating National Cancer Survivors Day. Today, we honor an estimated 12 million cancer survivors in the United States, their caregivers, and those who advocate for them. You have overcome great obstacles and persevered through difficult times, and we celebrate your achievements.

I am pleased to report that overall cancer death rates decreased by 2 percent per year from 2002 through 2004, nearly twice the annual decrease per year from 1993 through 2002. These encouraging statistics are due in part to advances in treatment. For example, we have seen significant advances in the treatment of some of the most difficult-to-treat cancers, including small cell lung cancer, liver cancer, and kidney cancer.

Because cancer survivorship presents unique challenges, the NCI’s Office of Cancer Survivorship is studying interventions to prevent adverse outcomes of cancer and its treatment. NCI research also addresses follow-up care for survivors and the well-being of family members and caregivers. For instance, results from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study are now informing the development of follow-up guidelines for these survivors. The NCI is also exploring new avenues of cancer prevention research, including identifying biomarkers of cancer risk and studying promising new chemoprevention agents.

I commend the efforts of all those involved in National Cancer Survivors Day and appreciate your work in honoring and increasing awareness of the millions of cancer survivors throughout this country. I wish you the best for a successful National Cancer Survivors Day.
